Use the highest octane you can find. Suzuki designed this engine to run on "regular" unleaded gas as it existed in California in the early '80s. At that time "regular" unleaded had an octane rating of 88 - 90.
Do not use "gasohol" if you can avoid it. The agricultural grade "ethanol" used to make it is usually about 50% ethanol, 40% methanol, and 10% water. Also, unlike regular gasoline, gasohol will absorb moisture from the atmosphere. The longer it sits, the higher the water content.
Do not try to compare the octane rating of gas in Europe or Japan with the U.S. system. They are completely different.
One side note: I have found that the farting (backfiring) is greatly reduced when I add injector cleaner to the gas. Raises the octane. And it's farting, not burping. Burping takes place at the intake end of the system. If you get blowback through the carburator, that's burping.
